Nineveh in Assyria a city in decay
With streets of filth violence and sin festering day by day
A voice like thunder splits the sky with God’s divine decree
Commanding Jonah rise and preach denounce their wicked deeds
With trembling soul and fear for life he shunned God’s holy wish
To Joppa’s port he fled boarding a vessel to Tar shish
Now far from shore no land in sight a tempest wailed a tune
Of crashing waves relentless winds foretelling certain doom
This salty grave was beckoning the ocean’s hunger grew
So overboard Jonah he leapt to save both ship and crew
The waters calmed the storm abates the sea restored to peace
While Jonah’s left there bobbing up and down in briny seas
A whale of a tale or parable profound
In either case this rings true God’s mercy knows no bounds
God’s mercy knows no bounds
He’s bait a wiggling morsel and from the depths below
A mighty fish arises and swallows Jonah whole
A cavern of salvation in the belly of the beast
This house of ribs serves one request repent and be released
Jonah dwells three days and nights then wrestles doubt no more
Spewed forth from grace’s mighty jaws to Nineveh’s dry shore
Your second chance go preach these words God’s terms to Jonah came
Clean up your act you’ve forty days or else destruction reigns
The King and commoners believed heeding the prophet’s cry
Repentance swept through streets like flame with sackcloth they complied
God saw their hearts had turned from sin and all there evil ways
His mercy spared the city from a catastrophic fate
A whale of a tale or truth divinely found
In either case this rings true God’s mercy knows no bounds
God’s mercy knows no bounds
